On October 29, 2026, the crypto world woke up to a nightmare. Binance hacked became the most searched phrase in the industry after the world’s largest exchange lost billions of dollars in a single evening. Whether you hold crypto, trade on any exchange, or just follow the markets, this guide explains the incident in plain English and shows what to do next.
According to TRM Labs, the preparation began a day earlier. On October 28, the attacker’s wallet quietly received small amounts from Tornado Cash, a service that hides the origin of funds. Early on October 29, the attacker tested malicious code on two wallets.
The real drain started at 20:05 UTC. Most of the money left Binance within about twenty minutes. Hours later, founder Changpeng Zhao publicly hinted that the company had likely been hacked, and Binance then confirmed a security incident and paused withdrawals on multiple networks.
Binance’s early findings suggest the breach began with one compromised laptop. That device gave the attacker a path into a service container, from where unauthorized withdrawal requests were sent. Reports say the laptop belonged to an engineer.
The takeaway is uncomfortable but important. Blockchains themselves were not broken. A human endpoint was, and that is often the easiest door for a skilled attacker. The investigation is still running, so expect more details in the coming days.
Both TRM Labs and Chainalysis point toward TraderTraitor, a group linked to North Korea. TRM notes that earlier attacks by the same family also involved long preparation and signatures collected in advance. For scale, the previous record was the roughly $1.5 billion Bybit theft in February 2025, so this event is about four times larger. Keep in mind that attribution by analysts is not an official verdict.
There is a silver lining. Binance and its partners say they froze around $3 billion, and Tether alone reportedly froze about $1.56 billion linked to the hack. Binance co-founder Yi He wrote that user funds are safe and that the exchange will cover every loss. The company also says it has set aside more than $6.34 billion for this purpose.
Context helps here. Binance held roughly $144 billion in assets before the incident, so the stolen amount is around four percent of that. Analysts quoted by CNBC do not see a major solvency threat right now. Still, exchange balances are not insured like bank deposits, so promises should be verified through official updates.
Bitcoin slipped to about $77,000 as traders rushed to the exit. In a bizarre twist, the hacker also dumped a little-known 2017 token that then crashed roughly 90 percent. The same day, prediction market Polymarket disclosed a smaller third-party breach of under $3 million. Axios links the episode to a wider wave of cyber incidents this month, which some in the industry call “Black October”.

Binance states that user funds are safe and that it will absorb the losses from its own reserves. Withdrawals are paused for now, so access is limited until security checks finish. Follow only official announcements for the restart date.
Part of it may be. Roughly $3 billion has been frozen with help from partners, and law enforcement is involved. However, funds already moved through mixers are much harder to trace, so full recovery is uncertain.
Not necessarily. Active traders need exchange balances, but long-term holders can keep a large share in their own wallets. Decide based on your trading style, and never keep more on an exchange than you can afford to have stuck for weeks.
The Binance incident proves that even the biggest names carry risk. Strong security habits, patience and a diversified plan matter more than any single headline.
