Every investment trades return for risk. The goal is to pick the mix that fits you.
The stock market isn’t the only place to grow your money. If you want steadier returns, regular income, or a cushion when markets fall, India offers several alternatives. Here’s an honest comparison with current numbers (mid-October 2026): what each option can earn, how much you need, what it costs and how risky it is.
Reality check: return and risk always travel together. Anyone promising “5% daily”, “guaranteed profit” or “risk-free” returns is either misleading you or running a scam.
Quick Comparison: Stock Market Alternatives in India
| Option | Indicative return | Minimum* | Risk |

| NSC / SCSS / SSY | 7.7% / 8.2% / 8.2% | Few hundred to ₹1,000 | Very low |
| Gold (ETF, digital) | No fixed return | ~₹120 (1 ETF unit) | Medium–High |
| Mutual fund SIP | Market-linked | ₹100–₹500 a month | Low to High |

*Minimums vary by bank and platform. Returns are indicative, not promises.
The Options in Brief
Safe and steady
Bank FD. The rate is locked when you book. The RBI raised the repo rate to 5.50% in October 2026, so new deposit rates may rise, but existing FDs keep their old rate. Interest is taxed at your slab, and deposits are insured up to ₹5 lakh per bank.
PPF and small savings. The government has kept rates unchanged for the October–December 2026 quarter: PPF 7.1%, NSC 7.7%, SCSS and Sukanya Samriddhi 8.2%. Rates are reviewed every quarter, and PPF has a 15-year lock-in.
Balanced
Gold. Prices were around ₹1.5 lakh per 10 grams on 13 October. Gold can hedge inflation but swings sharply. The cheapest route is a Gold ETF (a unit traded near ₹122 on 1 October), which needs a demat account.
Mutual fund SIP. Lets you invest small amounts every month. Equity funds are still market-linked and can fall; debt funds are calmer. See our mutual fund guide.
REITs. Own a slice of offices and malls through NSE-listed units. REITs must distribute most of their income, and the five listed ones raised payouts in FY26. But payouts vary and unit prices move.
High risk
P2P lending. Platforms are RBI-regulated, but you carry the borrower’s default risk, with no deposit insurance.
Crypto. India levies a flat 30% tax and 1% TDS with no loss set-off, so even profitable trades can leave little after tax.
Options are riskier than stocks. A SEBI study found options caused about 92% of individual traders’ aggregate losses in FY25–26. Many offshore forex platforms aren’t authorised for Indian residents, so verify before sending money.

How Much Can You Earn? A Simple Example
Suppose you invest ₹10,000 a month for 10 years (₹12 lakh in total):
|
Invested
₹12 lakh
|
At assumed 7%
~₹17.3 lakh
|
At assumed 12%
~₹23 lakh
|
Illustrative only. 7% resembles PPF/FD-type returns, but those rates can change. 12% is an equity-fund-style assumption (Nifty 50’s 25-year average was about 12.6%) and can be far lower, or negative, in some years.
What Will It Cost You?
- FD, PPF, small savings: no running cost, only tax on interest (PPF is tax-free).
- Gold ETF, REIT: a demat account plus brokerage. Gold ETFs also carry a small annual fee.
- Mutual funds: an annual expense ratio, usually lower in direct plans.
- Crypto: 30% tax and 1% TDS on top of exchange fees.
Which One Suits You?
|
Want safety
PPF, small savings, bank FD. |
Want balance
SIP in diversified funds, a small gold slice, REITs for income. |
Can take losses
Keep P2P or crypto to a tiny share you can afford to lose. |
Red Flags to Avoid
- Guaranteed or daily returns, or “double your money” claims.
- Tips and schemes pushed through Telegram or WhatsApp groups.
- Platforms or advisers with no SEBI or RBI registration you can check.
Don’t treat these as stock market replacements. Treat them as building blocks. A sensible plan mixes safe options for stability, a balanced slice for growth, and only a tiny share in risky ones. Start with what you understand, and invest small first.
